Many people now live in societies where consumer goods have become relatively cheap. Do you think the advantages of cheaper consumer goods outweigh the disadvantages

It is true that cheap goods have been widespread in recent years in many nations, particularly in developing countries. While the drawback of cheaper goods is evidently clear, I believe that they have brought significant benefits to consumers.

To begin with, there are a number of obvious disadvantages that the consumption of cheap goods cause for environment and consumers. Firstly, the production of cheap good is a key factor contributing to environmental problems. To reduce the price of products, many factories are likely to ignore waste treatment, which leads to contaminated water. Secondly, the manufacture of cheap good tends to use untreated material which harm to customers. In Vietnam, for example, children are confronting with the risk of lead poisoning by playing with low price Chinese toys.

Although cheap goods may trigger some drawbacks above, in my view, they have a wide range of benefits to societies as well as consumers. From social perspective, cheap goods facilitate massive productions because they do not require the investment in technology. This, therefore, generates a huge number of jobs in industrial zones, which enable nations achieve a thriving industry. In the view of consumers, a majority of population, especially in developing countries, with low income would have more opportunities for approaching diversity of goods on daily basis. A good illustration is that in Vietnamese mountainous areas, at the present, the life of local residents has been in comfort with the widespread of cheap goods instead of the necessaries of life as previously.

In conclusion, I would argue that the benefit of cheaper consumer goods outweigh the disadvantages.
