Question

The figures clearly illustrate the number of commodities transmitted in the UK from 1974 to 2002 by different transportations.

In an overall view, the quantities of goods transported by pipeline, water, and road saw an upward trend though there were some volativities during this period. Whilst, the railway is not as widely used as others since the number of goods transferred remained the same through 3 decades.

Road and water transportation revealed as the best among 4. The gap between goods transported in the UK by road and water narrowed from 1974 to 1982. Then the Road line increased significantly to 82 million tonnes in 10 years, exceeding the number of Water, which rose gradually and stabilized at 60 million tonnes. In the next decade, Road and Water saw a moderate decrease and then recovered by 20 million tonnes and 12 million tonnes correspondingly.

The Pipeline is the only one that has a positive upward trend throughout this period. It hit its peak at 22 million tonnes in 1995 and then flattened out until 2002. The opposite pattern is seen for rail, which fluctuated dramatically during 3 decades. It hit the lowest point at 22 million tonnes in 1995.
