The line graph provides a comparison of passenger railway journeys in Great Britain over the period between 1950 and 2005.

It is observed that in 1950 the number of passengers using national rail network stood at 1,000 millions and rose slightly to reach a peak of 1,100 millions in 1960. 20 years later was a period of exponential decrease with the passenger number plunging to a low of 700 millions. For London Underground, the figure remained relatively unchanged at 700 millions from 1959 to 1970. This was followed by another fall in 1980 when the number of passengers was almost 100 millions lower than 1970. However, both London Underground and National rail network saw considerable climb since 1980 and reach 1.000 millions and 1,100 millions respectively in 2005.

In stark contrast, meanwhile, in the first years of 1960s Light rail and metro systems appeared but they were not popular in Britain. Until 1980 the British began to use these systems with somewhere in the vicinity of 100 millions and this rate grew steadily to 2005, at 200 millions.
