The line graph illustrates the proportion of people going to work day by day by three different means of transport in the United Kingdom from 1970 to 2030.
Overall, driving cars was the most common way to work in the UK. While the number of commuters using cars and trains increased, the figure for bus users fell steadily over a period of 60 years.
By 1970, the proportion of workers driving cars was approximately 5 million while that of travelling by train and bus were around 2 and 4 million people. In 2000, the number of commuters using cars continued to rise by about 2 million people. There was a similar trend for the figure of rail users, reaching 3 million. By contrast, there was a slight decrease in the number of people going to work by bus.
In 2030, the proportion of car users will nearly reach 9 million people. Due to being at the same point in 2015, there will be a significant change in 2030. The figure for workers using the train rises gradually to above 5 million while the number of bus users goes down.
