The given bar chart compares the proportions of English and Welsh people dwelling in their houses or renting accommodations from 1918 to 2011.

Obviously, homeownership became more popular, while renting houses witnessed a contrasting movement during the given period.

In 1918, nearly 80% of people in England and Wales chose to live in rented accommodations, in comparison with those owning houses. In the following years, the percentages of households renting living places was still far higher than that of owning houses, despite the fact that the trend of homeownership became more popular throughout the years. In 1971, the number of people buying private living place was similar with the figure for those who rented houses.

From that time onwards, most of English and Welsh people lived in their own house instead of renting. From 1971 to 2001, the proportion of households in rented accommodation decreased significantly to 30%, the recovered slightly to 36% in 2011. In the same period, that of homeownership increased to about 70%, and felt mildly in 2011.
