The bar chart illustrates the proportion of families who owned and rented places to live in England and Wales in the period of 94 years, from 1918 to 2011. Overall, it is immediately obvious that both figures saw enormous fluctuations. Looking at the chart in more detail, in 1918, the number of families renting accommodation was nearly three times higher than that of those in owned accommodation, accounted for just over 75%. This proportion fell sharply to 50% in 1971, although it experienced the same level between 1939 and 1953, about 30%. On the contrary, the figure of households in owned accommodation was a two-fold increase in a period of 54 years, from 1918 to 1971. It remained stable approximately around 30% between 1939 and 1953 before jumping to equal those in rented accommodation. From 1981 to 2001, there was a significant growth in households in owned accommodation, from 60% and reached its peak at nearly 70% in 2001 before declining by 5% in 2011. However, the proportion of tenants saw a different trend, with numbers experiencing a moderate reduction, about 30% in 2001 followed by a slight climb to 35% in 2011.
