The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.

The line graph illustrates the percentage of citizens aged over 65 and over in three main countries: Japan, Sweden and USA over a period of 100 years starting from 1940.

It is clear that while US residents and Swedish aged 65 witness a slight increase from 1940 to 2040. Also, the figure for Japan is expected to see the most dramatic changes in its elderly proportion.

As can be observed from the line graph, in 1940 there was an average of nearly 10 percent were aged over 65 or over, in comparison with Sweden, the proportion of elderly people was around 7 percent, followed by 5 percent Japanese people. The proportion of Swedish and US people experienced a gradual rise of nearly 15 percent at the same period in the next 50 years. By contrast, the year 1990 saw a steep decrease below 5 percent.

Looking into the future, after the year of 2000s, there is a significant change in each figure. Swedish overtake US residents, it reaches a peak with the figure standing at 20 percent, but later it fluctuates and is predicted to increased significantly. During the same period, there is a sudden increase in the figure for Japan, with a jump over 10 percent in just 10 years from 2020 to 2030, then the figure is thought to be climbed up sharply and reach roughly 27 percent.
