The chart compares how many students will learn three different main world languages during the period 2020 – 2030.
As can be seen from the graph, the number of students choosing to study English, Spanish, Mandarin as a second language is forecast to rise significantly. One striking feature is that the quantity of Spanish learners is predicted to outnumber that of Mandarin ones.
In 2020, it is expected that over 500 million people will study English, followed by more than 200 million in Spanish and 100 millions in Chinese. All three figures are projected to grow noticeably until 2024 when the number of Spanish and Mandarin students will be equal at 300 million. After this time, there are predictions that there will be fluctuations in how many people studying these three global languages before hitting peaks at the end of the period ( 750 million English learners, approximately 600 million Spanish learners, followed by 500 million Mandarin learners).
