Freedom of media

Question

The media is the mirror of the society depicting the political environment and making discourses on the issues of significance. Nevertheless, some people think that the freedom of the press, television or Internet should be curtailed. In my opinion, it should not be circumvented unless it harms the national security.

In the first place, there are reasons why much respect should be paid to the right of mass media. First, it provides the public with enriching insights into economic, political and environmental issues. This would lead to the fact that individual could have multiple perspectives of such issues. Second, with the media, the transparency of the government affairs will be improved as the result of misdemeanors and wrong doings of the authorities being brought to light. Without the interference of the press for example, many corruptions will have fallen into oblivion.

However, national security should be placed above the freedom of press in certain circumstances. One of these could possibly be the documents related to confidential military which could render the country to war. Thus, the problem of leakage of the information on newspaper or networks might be out of control without the supervision of the authorities. Also, mentioning about national research projects or findings should be restricted. The rationale is the possibility of public panicking.

In conclusion, the media has enabled mankind to be more easily accessible to information. Consequently, there are merits in articles and news-letters representing free opinions revolving around all corners of the society, at the same time, respecting governmental-relating documents.
