In recent decades, celebrities have been receiving a great deal of media attention, causing a debate on the information material in articles about them. Although media have been insisted on reporting breaking news, the impact on celebrities’ privacy should be viewed as significant.
Famous stars and influencers have been treated unfairly by the press in a variety of ways. First, since a section of the public holds curiosity about normal days of entertainment stars, the press, especially online tabloids, concentrates on these famous people’s daily life by adding articles updated within minutes. This will act as a deterrent for highlighted celebrities to maintain the peak of artistic performance as they are distressed and wondered whether their other sides are observed. Second, some media platforms are generating profits at the expense of famous people rather than ordinary ones. For example, in order to improve access to the website, a digital reporter would assert bold capital headlines about an actress’s rumored scandal and thus attracts readers, which deters this actress’s reputation and career.
It should not be ignored that the media must give more privacy and space for famous figures. In fact, influencers including movie stars and athletes, even if they possess a critical voice in various aspects, are normal human with subjective emotions. Therefore, if their life outside the stage is revealed without their permission, some of them may be susceptible to psychological trauma or even suicide due to hate speech. In addition, it would violate the laws if media continue to overwhelmingly scrutinize celebrities. For instance, Vietnam legislators released a policy concerning personal privacy, targeting particular brands for using an influencer’s images illegally.
In conclusion, famous people’s rights should be regarded as one priority of press publishers. This will benefit not only famous ones but also those publishers and the society as a whole.
