The graph illustrates changes in the proportion of houses which have access to recent technology in Britain from 1996 to 2003

Overall, the percentage of families using at least one of the four modern technologies saw an increase between 1996 and 2003. Among them, the figure for CD player was always the highest.

In 1996, mobile phone was the device with the least number of users in Britain, at only just under 20%, compared to home computer and CD player, at about 30% and 60%, respectively. From 1996 and 1998, there was a linear growth among all three devices, with mobile phone starting to close the gap with home computer. By 1998, however, the average household began to have access to the Internet at about 10%, and home computer was overturned by mobile phone several months later, at about 38%.

Afterwards, the percentage of mobile phone users fluctuated wildly, but remained higher than the figures for home computer and internet access, reaching 65% in 2003. It can also be seen that among those with a home computer, more and more people were having access to the Internet. By the beginning of 2002, more than 42% of the population had Internet access, only 5% lower than the figure for home computer.
