In many countries today, people in cities either live alone or in small family units, rather than in large, extended family groups. Is this a positive or negative trend?

Nowadays people in big cities prefer to live alone or in nuclear family rather than in an extended family. To my mind, this trend brings about certain positive developments but there are also some negative impacts to consider.

On the one hand, it is clear that living in a nuclear family has several advantages. Firstly, nuclear family enables every family member to independently develop themselves and build their self-esteem, provided parental supervision. Another benefit is that conflicts between family members are rarely to happen. Because of the narrow generation gap and the positive bond each member shares, the members in a nuclear family get on well with each other. Therefore, the peace and harmony of family life is kept steadily due to this reason.

On the other hand, there are some disadvantages, one of which is the concern about children’s health. When parents stick to their hectic working schedules, they have little time for their children. As a result, children are isolated in the house and stick to televisions and mobile phones. This creates a sedentary lifestyle among the children, which is undoubtedly not good for their mental health, and it is only a matter of time before obesity come to them. What is more, the loss of cultural tradition is another disadvantage. Parents, who have so many demands on their time, are perhaps not in the best position to instill traditional values in their offspring. For example, when it comes to folk stories or folk games, children brought up in nuclear family seem to be clueless about these notions due to their lack of accessibility. In an extended family, however, grandparents could impart these traditions in the children’s mind with tremendous ease.

In conclusion, there are some plus points to nuclear family such as the independence of each members and the harmony of the whole family. However, the downsides of this type of family would be attributed to the loneliness and isolation a child has to experience when staying indoors all day long and the lack of knowledge about cultural traditions.

On the one(other) hand, it is clear that living in a nuclear family has several advantages. Firstly, nuclear family enables every family member to independently develop themselves and build their self-esteem, provided parental supervision(mình không hiểu provide chia ed là do đâu). Another benefit is that conflicts between family members are rarely to happen(rarely  happen).

This creates a sedentary lifestyle among the children, which is undoubtedly not good for their mental health, and (có dấu phẩy rồi thì cho and mình thấy không hợp lí mấy) it is only a matter of time before obesity come to them. What is more, the loss of cultural tradition is another disadvantage. Parents, who have so many demands (demand for) on their time, are perhaps not in the best position to instill traditional values in their offspring.

However, the downsides of this type of family would be attributed to the loneliness and isolation (nên cho từ quan hệ vào) a child has to experience when staying indoors all day long and the lack of knowledge about cultural traditions.
