Tet, which is also known as Vietnamese Lunar New Year Festival, is considered the most important festival in our country. Tet is celebrated for 3 days from the 1st to the 3rd of January (Lunar Calendar). Tet is popular all over Vietnam and some countries which Vietnamese are studying or working in. The festival is a time for family-gathering and show Vietnamese’s respect to their ancestors. On 31st of December(Lunar Calendar)-the final day of old year, we clean up our homes, decorate it with a pot of peach blossom ,yellow apricot blossom or a kumquat tree. Then, we cook some special dishes at Tet like chung cake(a savory sticky rice cake stuffed with mung beans and pork) and sticky rice served with gio lua(Vietnamese sausage). Parents often take their kids to the market to buy new clothes for them. And some people pay off all debts to get rid of unlucky in new year. At night, some families wait until 8 p.m to watch Tao Quan – a special comedy show at the end of each years, others watch firework display in the stadium. On 1st and 2nd of January, we make offerings to our ancestors and pray for good things. Afterwards, People wearing new clothes, visit their friends and relatives. Adults give children lucky money( a red envelope with money inside). We eat candied ginger or candied coconut, talk together about things we’ve done last year, give each other some greetings like “Happy New Year”, “Wishing you a lucky and happy new year”. Vietnamese believe that: “The 1st for dad, the 2nd for mom, the 3rd for teacher. So we use the last day of the festival to visit our teachers and some who used to teach us too. At the end of the day family gather at a small table to have a cozy meal. We have boiled chicken, spring rolls(Vietnamese traditional fried pork), chung cake, pickled onions, red-sticky rice, gio lua. After Tet is end, people back to work and schools. I love Tet because it’s a great time for me and my family take a rest after such a busy and stressful year.
