Due to the technological revolution, how to communicate in modern life has become a frequent subject of debate. There is a thought that handwriting letters should be dispensed because they are needless. In my opinion, while this idea maybe justifiable, there are other aspects which should be taken into consideration.
With the first regard, there are numerous reasons that advanced technology can replace the traditional way of communication. First of all, thanks to many electrical gadgets and appliances which connected to Internet, it is much easier and more convenient to contact with each other. For example, social networks like Gmail, Facebook or Instagram allow people to keep in touch with their family and friends no matter how far it is between them. Moreover, using modern devices to communicate means that we can save more time and energy. In the past, people had to wait about 2-5 days until a single letter was delivered, but now online chatting is one example which show how the message can be improved by narrow time need response (only a few minutes). In addition, because most of devices to communicate are portable, we can send messages every time and everywhere while there is not a physical piece of paper available. In international business or studies issues, for instance, it is really useful to write a letter through electronic devices that allow important information to be sent overseas immediately and still communicate in a formal manner.
On the other hand, writing habit cannot easily disappear for these following reasons. Initially, letter writing is traditional way of communication that is deeply embedded in many societies. Thus, in many big events of life such as wedding or birthday party, people still send invitations and wishes in a traditional way to express the sincerity and formality. Secondly, handwriting plays an important role in many subjects such as history and literature. Letter writing can be a source of documentation and evidence that we can base on to research history, likewise in literature, handwriting is the only way to improve someone’s writing skills. Furthermore, some companies may ask their candidates to write an application letter in order to measure their capability in communicating by means of writing. After all, I believe by observing someone’s handwriting, we can evaluate parts of their personality.
In conclusion, despite the rapid growth of modern technology, letter writing will not be abolished in the future because it possesses a significant importance in communication.
