Providing prisoners with computer remains a subject of controversy. Some people claim that this policy has a positive effect on human rights while others think that it can jeopardize national security. I partly oppose the decision for the following reasons.
On the one hand, I assume that there are several advantages of providing prisoners with computer. Firstly, with regard to psychology, prisoners see concerns of governments, supporters of this decision believe that then they may think again their mistakes and future. With governments equipping the criminals with computer, they fell comfortably because of having more leisure time and entertainment. Secondly, in term of education, prisoners were retrained personality, cultural norms, morality to aim to make them better citizens by rehabilitation. Futhermore, when they learn a lot of knowledge and life lessons, they receive education of vocational training, personal skills and specific job skills. Thirdly, regarding economy, governments have many cheap labors by virtue of inmates doing part-time jobs., and hence they bestowing economic benefits on nations. Finally, concerning health, if they watch sports programmes on computer, physical health will be cultivated by doing exercises everyday.
On the other hand, I believe that there are some disadvantages effect on national security and economy. When it comes to security, with criminals provided with computer, citizens may sense insecure. Only when prisoners are put together do they probably make friends with other offenders. According to a recent study, there are above 40 percent the rate of re-offended inmates after they released. Rarely do polices control underground activities, and therefore they can hardly ensure jailer’s life. In respect of economy, governments waste a amount of national budget when they invest too much in provided computer for them. Besides, governments have to pour a huge money into management and maintenance of computer system. Social statistics have demonstrated that we need over 1200 dolar per one computer to purchase and to maintain computer problems.
In conclusion, I hardly embrace the idea of providing computer for prisoners because this can seldom ensure security nations and economy.
