The bar chart illustrates the changes in the proportions of the total world population in four countries, namely India, China, USA and Japan in 1950, 2002 and prediction for 2050.

Overall, the population of China was always greater than that of the other three countries in two out of the three years. In addition, the four countries showed a downward pattern in the number of people over the whole period of time with the exception of India.

In 1950, China accounted for nearly 24% of the global population, which was the highest of the four countries. In the next 52 years, the figure for Chinese population experienced a marginal decrease to exactly 20% in 2002, and it is predicted to decline gradually to a low of precisely 15% in 2050. By contrast, the proportion of Indian population showed an upward trend over the 100 - year period. It hit the lowest point of exactly 15% in 1950, which was matched by that of China, and then rising to just under 20% in 2050.

The figures for Japan followed a similar pattern as China, starting at about 4% in 1950 and decreased gradually by around 2% over the next 100 years. The percentage of the USA population was a little higher than that of Japan in 1950, at around 6%. However, after declining to exactly 5% in 2002, it remained unchanged over the following 48 years.
