The number of older people is increasing. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

         These days, thanks to the development of living standard and medical facilities, human’s expectancy is prolonged. Therefore, aging population is growing that has both positive and negative effects on societies.

         On the one hand, the increasing number of elders brings many benefits. In fact, older people have a great deal of precious experience and knowledge which is gain over their whole life compared to adolescent. Therefore, young generations could get many valuable lessons from elders in order to avoid repeating their mistakes. Moreover, a society with a large number of old people will have a lower crime rate as youngsters tend to have more problems with alcohol or drug abuse. Consequently, to some extents, growing aging population impacts on societies in a good way.

         On the other hand, this trend also have many adverse impacts. First, aging population is regarded as unproductive group which doesn’t profit for societies but  they require many community services such as medical service. Especially, government have to spend a significant expenditure on paying pension if its society has a high number of elders, while there are many other fields needing national investment. Second, with their poor health condition, old people are not able to give birth that leads to the decrease in birthrate. As a result, increasing aging population leads to many relevant problems for society.

         In conclusion, there are plus points for aging population including their valuable experience and precious knowledge. However, the downside would emerge consequently in terms of low productivity, the need for special care that takes many money and effort.
