In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.

In many countries, some people believe that the young should spend a year on working or travelling before starting university studies. Both the advantages and disadvantages of this trend will be discussed in this essay.

A gap year can bring many new things to high school graduates. Firstly, when they apply for a job or travel to interesting places, they can broaden their horizons. For example, youngsters can improve communications skills and know how to deal with problems themselves. As a result, they can gain valuable experiences for their work lives and social lives. Secondly, taking a break from education gives young people the chance to consider what the right course is. While discovering countries and cultures, they might find out what they really want to follow in higher education. Therefore, they are more likely to achieve success in the future.

On the other hand, several disadvantages of choosing to work or travel before entering the university can be identified. Young people who have left school recently have a lack of experience. Hence, they could take risks in the trips in new countries or be cheated such as employers might not pay them the worthy salary. Furthermore, a year is a long time so they can forget the basic knowledge of many subjects or lose the motivation to go back to the studies. Consequently, they can find it more difficult to keep up with their peers.

In conclusion, I believe that there are both the advantages and disadvantages for high school graduates who take a gap year before acquiring a higher education.
