In most universities students focus on specialised subjects, however some people believe that universities should encourage students to study a wide spectrum of subjects. To want extent you agree or disagree? Give your opinion.
It is popular majority of universities, today, only provides students with courses that train them to be specialized in a particular area. However, this is opposed by some people as they believe students should be encouraged to enroll in a broad variety of subjects. Personally, I disagree with the latter and my reasons will be discussed in this essay.
Firstly, specialized coursework better prepares university goers to match the needs of industries. It is clear that the job market is increasingly diversified and divided into different sectors. In order to adapt to this trend, companies only hire employees who possess particular skills to be efficient for certain positions and this management style is commonly employed in many large and medium corporates. By equipping students with specialized knowledge in area of interest, their future career prospects would be significantly enhanced as it closely meets the requirements of many firms. Also, because employability of students is a part of university responsibility, specialized subjects need to be widely encouraged to fit the needs of current job market.
Furthermore, studying a wide spectrum of subjects, I believe, lowers the efficiency of learning. It is no doubt that human knowledge is massive and impossible for a person to have a good grasp on them all. Hence, instead of motivating students to develop certain skills, a broad view on variety of areas, in contrast, does not equip them with useful knowledge for real world applications and slowly deteriorates their analytical and problem solving abilities as the result of less critical thinking exercises on a particular matter. Consequently, their learning abilities will be aggravated in a long run.
In conclusion, specialized subjects need to be encouraged and offered more at universities as its merits meet the expectations of employers and improve learning abilities of students.
