Whilst being considered as a specific problem of less-developed countries which are still coping with the lack of trained teachers and infrastructure, illiteracy has been surprisingly affecting the first world education systems. This essay will discuss some of the causes of illiteracy in developed countries and its consequences to the society.

One of the main reasons is the invention of visual content. The commercialisation of television impacted people behaviour of obtaining information. People have been passively developing the habit of watching TV programmes and spending less time on books. Moreover, the increasingly ubiquitous presence of mobile devices makes thing worse, when online videos and games are becoming more and more accessible. As a result, the book shelf turns to be the most luxury item in the house.

On the other hand, the fast-pace lifestyle requires more time from adult people, the parents. The more they work and expand their social relationship, the less time they allocate to educate their children. Consequently, kids nowadays could not understand the importance of reading, the activity they deem to be tedious and onerous.

As uneducated persons are incapable of developing themselves and struggling with finding suitable jobs, illiteracy directly affects the economy by increasing unemployment rate. This introduces a more sever issue to the society, when unemployed people start doing illegal jobs such as smugglers or drug dealers.

To tackle with illiteracy and its impacts on the society, the government and public organisations need to work on gaining the awareness of illiteracy and promoting books to everybody. Each individual also has to take responsibilities of educating themselves and their children, for their better lives and for a better nation.
