Question

Some people think that zoos are cruel and should be closed down. Others however believe that zoos can be useful in protecting wild animals. Discuss both opinions and give your own opinion.


People hold different views on whether zoos should be shut down or not. While some individuals believe that it is cruel and unnecessary to put animals in captivity, I stand with the view that zoos contribute great benefits in preserving wild animals.

On the one hand, people are convinced of the cruel of zoos and support the opinion of closing them can because they are afraid captive animals will lose their instincts. This can be reasoned by the fact that animals are often caged in limited space, which limits them from learning behaviours as animals in the natural environment. However, recently, there is an increasing number of zoos that are trying to mimic natural habitats with the conditions of individuals living outside. This will make sure animals have environments to promote their instinctive abilities

On the other hand, I am of the opinion that zoos bring more benefits in conserving wild animals. First of all, captive animals will receive the most optimal care due to the extensive knowledge about nourishing animals of staff. For example, when there are vulnerable animals, they will receive directly good conditions, which protects them from being dead. Moreover, zoos take an essential role in reducing the extinction rate of animals in natural habitats. This is because zoos support the process of breeding and then releasing them to nature, which enlarges individuals living outside.

In conclusion, while it is explainable to think that zoos are cruel and should be closed, it seems to me that zoos contribute a lot to protect animals living in nature.
