Whether we should include courses that teach something useful and practical to students remains a question of heated debate. Many people support this idea, while others claim that practical knowledge and life skills are unnecessary and may take up all the time of theoretical knowledge, which are important to exams. I strongly agree with the former statement for the following reasons.
First of all, practical knowledge and theoretical knowledge is equally important for a person to manage his life. It is a worrying fact that many students nowadays are filled with astounding certificates and academic achievements but don’t know even the simplest housekeeping skills such as doing the laundry, washing the dishes or preparing meals. Many parents believe that for children to maintain their concentration on studying and be ready in preparation for exams, it is important that they dedicate all their time to studying and that parents should all do the household chores for children. However, this is a wrong perception and can have unimaginable consequences. For example, if a teenager is not equipped with practical knowledge and life skills, he will be overwhelmed when transitioning from high school to the university environment. This not only results in depression but also affect their studying negatively.
Secondly, in this modern society, every work requires not only academic knowledge but also practical one. For example, if a student always does well in examinations but do not know how to put his knowledge into practice, all his efforts during his school years will be completely wasted. Also, many employers nowadays tend to put their preference for people with real-life skills and experiences, so being equipped with practical knowledge, students can get an advantage over other candidates when applying for a job.
Last but not least, success would not come solely with academic achievements but also continuous efforts and practical skills. Being equipped with these, a person may reach the highest level of efficiency in every work. Also, a person who has a lot of academic qualifications will be remembered during a period. However, a person who knows how to put that knowledge into practice invents something for the need of the society and marked a milestone in history will be remembered forever by every generation.
To conclude, it is important that we should provide students with more practical courses.
