Topic: Some students prefer to take a year off between school and university  to work or travel. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

A gap year seems to be an appealing idea for many young people in some nations. While several drawbacks are  undeniable, this trend can also bring huge benefits. My essay will shed light on this issue.

There are several demerits of this trend. First, once students decide to travel and work before attending colleges, chances can be left behind. After one year, they will find it hard to get back into their schedule and regain study momentum, from the loss of academic knowledge and peer pressure. Secondly, these high school leavers will feel homesick as it's the first time they have lived far away from their homes. Finally, there are many potential risks like robberies, burglaries, or traffic accidents which these students are likely to face up in their journey.

Despite the drawbacks above, there are reasons to believe that the benefits of taking a gap year are even greater. Primarily, the students can accumulate plenty of knowledge and experience as they can set food in new lands and associate with many people coming from all walks of life. Hence, they will be more mature, willing to cope with many hardships that happen in later life. Also, a year of discovering the outside world is very meaningful for those who are undecidable about their career paths. Moreover, it becomes more and more problematic to take time off when you get older. So the time after graduating high school is ideal to expand their worldview outside the daily grind.

In conclusion, taking a year off between school and university to work and travel has both positive and negative outcomes. Therefore, students should consider their expectations to make the best decision.
