Question

The increase in people’s life expectancy means that they have to work until an older age to pay for their retirement. One alternative is that people start to work at a younger age. Is this a positive or negative development?

There has been an idea that people will have to devote a larger portion of their longevity to earn money for their retirement. Therefore, some individuals choose to work earlier. Personally, I think that this option has both positive and negative aspects.

 

On the one hand, it is unnecessary for people to have a job at a younger age. As for many students, working while studying is unrealistic because they are only able to handle some part-time jobs which only offer them very low salaries which are such a waste of time. Also, this amount of money is too poor for people to support their retirement in the future. By contrast, lots of high-paying jobs such as teachers, doctors, and engineers, require every person to have an excellent university qualification. Therefore, instead of wasting their spare time on starting a job at an early age, students should make use of their time to concentrate on essential subjects so as to receive a good diploma that helps them in their future career.

 

On the other hand, having an early job is advantageous for students’ development. This will probably help them to gain more pragmatic experience and accumulate valuable lessons. In the present age, many prestigious companies always highly appreciated practical experience rather than theoretical knowledge. For example, many well-known businesses like Alibaba, nowadays, request every member in their organisation to have good communication skills, co-operating skills and the flexibility in applying the theory into practice. The previous working experience provides students with necessary team-work skills and helps them to be more confident when collaborating with other people so as to complete their work effectively. Evidently, working earlier helps to build up a good preparation for the future.

 

In conclusion, starting to have work at an early age equally brings benefits and drawbacks to people’s life.
