Question: Some people get into debt by buying things they do not need and can not afford. What are the reasons for this behavior? What action can be taken to prevent people from having this problem?

 

Answer:

Some have got into debt due to purchasing unnecessary products which are too expensive for them to afford. The primary rationale of this phenomenon is the invention of credit cards and the most viable remedy is a public awareness campaign educating people about smart expenditure.

 

Chief among the causes of this problem is a large number of banks introducing credit cards, which encourages people to make purchases as much as possible. A credit card allows people to buy first and then pay at the end of the month. People are attracted by this function of the card, so they tend to purchase too much without knowing whether the products are needed or not. To illustrate, Tuoi Tre Newspaper recently reported that 82% of XBank credit card owners said that they were owing the bank a huge amount of money for buying excessive things. This results in a waste of money and many people go bankrupt when the payment deadlines come.

 

To tackle this problem, the government should launch a publicity campaign in the media to teach people about smart spending. This is because people need to be aware of how to spend money wisely. An awareness campaign could shed some light on this difficult situation and allow people to be more careful and manage their budgets efficiently when buying somethings. For instance, a similar initiative in Vietnam resulted in a 67% decrease in the number of luxury entertainment products purchased by credit cards.


In conclusion, some borrow a lot of money to buy unnecessary things and end up with not being able to pay back because of credit card development and a smart expense education campaign can be proposed to handle this issue.
