Question: Some people say that the best way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities. Others, however, say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Answer:
While some say that spending more on the number of public sports facilities is the best measure to enhance health in the society at large, other people claim that this remedy would not have many impacts on public health and other solutions should be considered. Although sports facilities are needed to improve people’s health, I believe that a public awareness campaign educating people about a healthy lifestyle would be a much better option.

On the one hand, facilities of sports are likely to have a favorable influence on human’s health. It is undeniable that gyms and swimming pools could help citizens to workout and practice swimming regularly, allowing them to be healthier than those who never play any sport. However, I would argue that sports facilities would not affect the society as a whole unless people’s awareness about an active life is improved. For instance, the World Health Organization recently reported that 60% of people who registered for annually gymnastic memberships stopped going to the gyms after one month since they did not have enough motivation to do so.

On the other hand, to increase public health, the government should launch a publicity campaign in the media and in schools to educate people about the importance of staying healthy. This could take the form of advertisements in print and social media telling people why they should stay away from sedentary lifestyles and be engaged in sports activities. To illustrate, a similar initiative in Japan resulted in a 56% increase in the number of dwellers who are involved in physical activities on a weekly basis. I believe that this sort of education is preferable because it encourages people to live more actively.

In conclusion, despite the benefits sports facilities may bring, I believe that an awareness campaign of doing exercise should be prioritized.
