Đề thi IELTS Writing ngày 17-2-2015:The use of mobile phone is as antisocial as smoking. Smoking is banned in certain places so mobile phone should be banned like smoking. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is suggested that using mobile phone should be prohibited in particular places because like smoking, it is antisocial. However, I strongly disagree with this idea because of a number of reason, as will now be discussed.
On the one hand, it is true that using cell phones can negatively affect nearby people. For example, phone users may speak too loud which make the others feel uncomfortable and even lose concentration on their work. In addition, smart phones also attract its user to read news, play games or post their status on social networks and this lead to less time spent for the face to face interaction and communication. However, it is clearly that those effects are not as dangerous as smoking which is proved to be very harmful to the surrounding people’s health due to the smoke’ toxic particles. Thus, a ban on phones would be too heavy.
On the other hand, banning phones in places would hinder people’s opportunities. Thanks to the introduction of smartphones, people nowadays not only use this device just to just simply talk with others, but also for tasks relating to their business. For example, some people are very busy with their jobs which require a lot of travel but smartphones allow them to reply e-mails or send pictures of documents almost instantly regardless of location. In addition, adopting a law to prohibit phone would require a large number of officers to catch the offenders, especially in the crowded and big cities. This could be a heavy burden on the national budget which are usually already under pressure.
In conclusion, using mobile phones is antisocial because the nearby individuals can be annoyed and distracted, but it is much less harmful than smoking and bring way more benefits to the users. While catching offending smokers are already difficult due to insufficient number of officers, banning phones would only place greater stress on the authorities’ expenditure.
