The charts below give information about USA marriage and divorce rates between 1970 and 2000, and the marital status of adult Americans in two of the years. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The first chart illustrates the number of marriages and divorces that took place in USA from 1970 to 2000, while the second chart shows changes in marital status of adult Americans in 1970 and 2000.

It’s clear from the chart that there was a downward trend in the number of married people from 1970 to 2000. Although most of adults in America got married in the both years, the country witnessed a modest increase in figures for single adults.

In the first chart, 2.5 million marriages took place in America in 1970 whereas the figure for divorces recorded in that year was 1 million. In the following 10 years, the marriage rate remained unchanged before it fell by 0.5 million to 2000. Meanwhile, America experienced a higher number of divorced adults, approximately 1.5 million in 1980 and then it fell back to 1000 million in 2000.

In the second chart, the share of adults who were married was at 70%, this figure slightly decreased by 10 % in 2000. There was a moderate fall in the number of widowed adults from around 9 % to 7% in 1970 and 2000 respectively. Meanwhile, the rate of never-married adults and divorcees grow by 10% in total in the recorded time.
