The diagram compares differences in design of houses in cool and warm climates.

The most noticeable discrepancies are roof designs, building materials, insulations and windows which impact on how houses handle heating and cooling.

Houses in cool climate are designed with high-angled roof which allows sun light to come into the room easily. However, in order to keep houses cool in warm countries, roof overhangs are made to shade windows.

It also can be seen that in cool climate houses, thermal building material and insulation are used to store the heat and help reduce heat transfer. Meanwhile, reflective material and insulation are used to cut down heat absorbed by warm climate buildings considerably.

Finally, there is only one window facing the direction of sun in cool climate houses to warm building interior. In contrast, having two windows on two sides allow warm climate houses to be ventilated at night.
