Government investment in the arts, such as music and theatre, is a waste of money. Government must invest this money in public services instead.
To what extent do you agree with this statement?
The question of how the national budget would be allocated has remained contentious recently. There is an argument that government should spend money on social services rather than the arts, typically music and theatre. Although government funds for public services is necessary, I am not convinced by the statement that it is wasteful to invest budget in the arts.
On the one hand, public services has a vital role to play in contemporary society. Infrastructure, facilities as well as healthcare service and education system are critical factors determining level of success of a country. People always wish to receive the excellent all-round education, be treated medically by high-qualified doctors or experience the modernized transportation system. High-quality public services not only reflect the good satisfaction of citizens with their life but also contribute to promote the national image to the world. Therefore, it is undeniable the paramount importance of the government investment in public services for the interests of the mass.
On the other hand, despite numerous benefits of allocating funds for sociable services, the art should be taken into consideration. In fact, the standard of living has constantly risen, requirements for entertainment of people have increased simultaneously. Museums, theatres, galleries which meet the spiritual needs of inhabitants have become more popular. Thanks to them, people can relax and enjoy their life after long working times. In addition, the art could enrich national budget by the taxes and revenue from artists and art programs. It is not exaggerated to admit that art is a kind of public services because art can bring about the happy and satisfied moments and help to popularize the national culture values through music, films or paintings.
In conclusion, apart from public services, the arts should be concerned by governments because of their wide range of advantages.
