In the past, buildings often reflected the culture of a society but today all modern buildings look alike and cities throughout the world are becoming increasingly similar. What do you think is the reason for this? And is it a good thing or a bad thing?

Globalization trend has influenced in many aspects of our life, from food with the fact that fast food restaurants mushroom all over the world; to the development of multi-national companies. However, the most significant evidence of this trend that we can see today is architecture. In fact, almost building facades today are becoming increasingly similar throughout the world, which fading the unique style of each society’s culture. I think the major reason of this change is underlying the needs of modern life: convenient and effective use.

In the past, the design of buildings mostly depended on their function as well as the traditional of their countries. However, due to urban sprawl, this kind of building has been taken place by the modern buildings. Particularly, the population growth and the movement of people from rural areas to big cities have led to the scarce of space. Therefore, a measure had to be taken to handle this problem and it was tall buildings. We cannot deny the fact that this kind of building brings for us many benefits. For example, with the same area, an old-designed building can hold 30 peoples with two storeys while a skyscraper can hold 10 times more people than the old one with 40 storeys.

In my opinion, it is a good change for human in modern world. There is no doubt that the more tall buildings a city has, the more development it tends to be. Moreover, a skyscraper can also be an ironic of a city, such as World Trade Center, is twin towers in New York. However, this change also has drawbacks. More and more skyscrapers which are similar can make the unique as well as the culture of cities become faded. For instance, if we travel and be surrounding by a range of tall building, we may wonder whether we are in another cities or still in our home.

In conclusion, with the reasons I mentioned above, I believe the pros outweigh the cons. Hence, we can also put some unique patterns in tall buildings that can show the traditional of each city like our ancestors did in the past.
