It is sometimes argued that university students should be restricted to study subjects that are beneficial for the future such as science and technology. While some people might think narrowing down the number of subject options at university is a great initiative, I am of the opinion that all subjects are equally important and students should not be forced to study what they do not like.
On the one hand, the opinion of only allowing university students to study subjects that will be useful in the future is attractive for several reasons. Firstly, the world is currently moving forward quickly with the development of technology, therefore, university students should be well-prepared with the updated technology and science knowledge to be able to adapt with new job opportunities that may arise in the future. Secondly, if the number of subjects is reduced, universities could focus their resources to design the most effective study programs, which will enhance the quality of the education system.
On the other hand, there are a variety of reasons why I believe students should study whatever subjects and majors they like. The main one is that different people have different strengths. Therefore, forcing them to study majors and ultimately pursue careers that are not suitable for them will reduce their work efficiency. The second reason relates to keeping a certain number of skillful workers for different aspects in life. The world has a variety of aspects other than just technology and science, and each aspect requires a certain number of experts. By allowing students to freely choose their subjects, governments can keep these numbers balance.
In conclusion, it seems evident that both opinions have its owns unique advantages, but I maintain that students should be encouraged to study subjects that they like rather than be forced to study only a few subjects such as technology or science.
