Historically, fashion has rarely been elevated to the same stature as painting, music, sculpture or architecture. While many people claim that fashion is not art, I believe that fashion is one of the purest expressions of art because it is art lived on a daily basis.
Art can be displayed through paintings, poetry, music, etc. One form of art is fashion. The way one dresses can represent different aspects of his personality. People often try to express themselves through the clothing and accessories that they wear. Fashion takes on many different facets and concerns many subsets, a model sashaying down the runway in a gown encrusted in real gems, Lady Gaga’s infamous dress made of cuts of raw beef, a teenage girl obsessing over the season’s latest styles, it is all an expression of our minds and who we are or want to be, made tangible. It is a medium just like any other, for while artists wield brushes and paints, designers use thread and cloth to illustrate their vision. The artistry is none more so apparent than in the exclusive world of haute couture, a world of extravagance that caters to aesthetics, producing one-of-a-kind wearable masterpieces that are made to be admired rather than worn. It is without doubt, high fashion and its design is an art.
Some pieces of fashion look so pretty that it may be considered art such as ballgowns. However some would argue that the purpose of an artist is not to make beautiful things but to just make art which is them expressing themselves and fashion is exactly what it says it is-fashion. They also may argue that fashion has a practical use whereas art does not. However many of the clothes seen going down the catwalk do not have a practical use and many designers create impractical clothes not deliberately trying to make the clothing impractical but to show their creativity which is exactly what artists do in their work. Designers often require the same skills as artists for things like designing the actual clothes and often the patterns in the clothes take as much designing as art does.
In conclusion fashion is art as art incorporates many things and fashions fits into it. In addition to this designers and artist collaborate creating works that can be considered both art and fashion. I believe that fashion is simply art that people wear on their bodies.
