In recent years, we have witnessed a significant breakthrough in technological advances which have influenced considerably on the way people read books. While an army of people believe that we are squandering our money on remaining public libraries whose role the developments of computer technology can substitute, I completely disagree with this statement and will give my reasons below:

First of all, it is undeniable that the emergence of high-tech computers has brought a variety of outstanding advantages. Just with a click, nowadays, we can have access to the Internet and read whatever we want such as books, daily news, magazines, newspapers and so on. Cutting-edge computers provide us with more abundant sources of information compared with traditional reading methods. With the unlimited quantity of books, it also much cheaper when we read through several websites than when we have to buy books. In addition, keeping up with the latest books is also one of the most useful functions of using technological advances.

In the other hand, besides plenty of benefits coming from the appearance of high-spec computers, however,  I suppose that nothing can replace public libraries’ functions. In comparison with the source of information based on the Internet, traditional books not only are much more reliable and trustworthy but also require readers to find and extract data more actively. In addition, reading real books brings us real feelings which stimulate our interests with the fragrance of book pages and the ink colors. Moreover, it is undoubted that being glued to the screen is much more harmful than chilling ourselves with realistic books. Besides, residents in the middle of nowhere being not facilitated to have access to the Internet will consider public libraries as the only way to find extra or advanced materials. Last but not least, public libraries supply a wonderful place like academic environments for those who have profound passions for reading books to interact and exchange information with each other.

In conclusion, it can be seen that computer technology has remarkable impacts on the method people choose to catch up with facts and figures but I believe that public libraries and paper books still play an indispensable roles in maintaining our cultural and educational values.
