     Nowadays, the role of universities is a controversial issue. Some people believe that it is necessary for a university to convey knowledge and skills to students which are relevant to their work later, others argue that university should give access to knowledge without regarding the career . Personally, I totally agree with the former view for a number of reasons.

     Firstly, it is obvious that university is one of the most important institutions in modern society. To begin with, the basic aim of university education is to provide a variety of subjects for students , thereby they could have a well-rounded knowledge. This means that these students who are equipped with various subjects would succeed quickly in terms of their careers. For example, an excellent businessman needs not only a thorough insight in his field but also a good English level in order to integrate into the global market.      

     On the other hand, I believe that providing useful knowledge and skills which are related to future career is more important. Firstly, universities are great places to train qualified employees. The specific knowledge and skills help improve the quality of graduate’s work . Therefore, universities should put a an emphasis on practical skills than theoretical understanding. Furthermore, job market is becoming demanding. These days, the managers have a tendency to employ experienced students rather than the freshers . Therfore Therefore, it is worthwhile for universities to consider teaching in order to ensure its students to get a successful career . 

     In conclusion, it seems to me that the most essential function of universities is to provide understanding and skills that are efficiently used for future job.
