News is a source of knowledge about the world. How much can we trust the journalists? What are the qualities a good journalist should have?
Due to the insatiable desire for updating news, journalism plays a crucial role in providing people worldwide knowledge and information. However, the question of how much should we put our faith in journalist and what merits a good journalist must have has always been a topical debate. In this essay, I will explain both these issues.
To answer the former question, I personally believe that we should trust the journalists but consider carefully as the same time. Firstly, mass media seems to be the only source of information, which covers academic knowledge in several fields. Education and medical, for example, are two of the most fundamental information that provided by reporters, thus without those we can possibly be dearth of essential knowledge. In addition, media informs us about social issues, which contains the latest worldwide news. Thanks to this information, we can always keep ourselves up-to-date and raise awareness about daily events. As the result, believing what the journalists say can somehow make us more informative and educational.
On the other hand, it is recommended that we should consider carefully while reading an article. The first reason is that there are more and more tabloids which include the gutter press in order to grab attention of the public. Consequently, reading to these sensational newspapers may cause the waste of time and the intense annoyance. Furthermore, many journalists nowadays take advantage of news to make individual profit. Hence, some unscrupulous reporters may exaggerate or distort the truth for the purpose of promoting some products. This propaganda, in this way, is converted into a misleading advertisement.
Regarding to the second question, a professional journalist need to have numerous qualities. First, they are expected to be good at expressing their ideas, in others word, to have a good language ability. Without this skill, the article could not have attracted the reader’s attention and might easily become too tedious, even how pressing the news is. Second, a brilliant journalist should be reliable and responsible. At all cost they have to bring the truth to the public and cannot deceive people in any way. Finally, creativity and constant news updates are the key factors to form a qualified journalist. Because mass media is a competitive environment, plus readers do not want to have old-fashioned, repetitive news, journalists have to renew their report up-to-minute and in a unique style, so that they can become well-known and successful.
In conclusion, though journalists seem to bring us various helpful information, we have to be watchful over the deceptive source of news. To become a good journalist, people should have wide range of language skills, as well as being honest, innovative and up-to-date.News is a source of knowledge about the world.
