Question: Some people think that it is good for a country's culture to import foreign movies and TV programmes. Others think that it is better to produce these locally. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Answer:
Some argue that the culture of a country would be at an advantage if they import movies and television programs, while other people believe that producing these locally would be better. While purchasing foreign films could bring chances to adopt new cultures for local people, I believe that a nation should invest in its own movies to provide the local with employment opportunities.
On the one hand, it is argued that importing movies from overseas could help citizens to mimic foreign customs. This is because audience, especially young people are likely to follow what famous foreign actors do on television, and this would lead to changes in the way they behave. To illustrate, the habit of queueing is a nice manner in many Western countries, and the Vietnamese could imitate this behavior from watching English movies. However, I believe that purchasing foreign movies should not be encouraged because some traditions from other countries could not be appropriate to local ones.
On the other hand, it is thought that local movie production could solve unemployment issues to some extent. This is to say that in order to make a movie, a variety of positions would be needed, such as actresses, directors and camera men. This would be a great chance for students from movie industry to be engaged in the film and develop their career path. To illustrate, a research from RMIT university discovered that a Chinese movie production firm employed thousands of people in China for their widespread film “Journey to the West” and hundreds of them became well-known after the film had been released. I believe domestic program and movie development should be prioritized as it could contribute to a reduction in the unemployment rate.
In conclusion, while buying foreign movies would be beneficial to a nation’s culture in learning a new culture, making a domestic one could create jobs for locals and this is, therefore, a much better choice.
