More and more students are choosing to study at colleges and universities in a foreign country. Do the benefits of studying abroad outweigh the drawback

Overseas studying has been becoming an ever-increasing path that plenty of learners decide to take after they complete high school. While the trend has its own bright side, I believe that the advantages dominate the positive impacts.

Firstly, some reputable foreign institutions are likely to offer students better courses. This means that they have experts in their specialties, and students will be imparted with valuable knowledge from an advanced education system. Hence, after they graduate, they would become more competitive in the labor market, as well as get a decent job with a handsome salary. Secondly, studying abroad will obviously broaden students’ horizons. Undoubtedly, this is an opportunity for them to see the world at first hand, to expose to different cultures and interact with people from other countries and continents. By that, students can accumulate their life experience and build strong social relationships.

However, drawbacks of studying in another country should also be taken into account. The first bottleneck is that these exchanged students might suffer from the pressure of living cost. Truth to be told, in most developed countries, such as the UK or the USA, the living expenses are pretty high from tuitions, food to the rent. As a result, students have to work extra to cover their expenses. This high cost might somewhat hinder the dream of the overseas study of some people and for those who are in financial difficulties might encounter the downturn of their studies. The second concern is that students might face culture shock and language barriers. Apparently, if students are unfamiliar with the new environment, they might be discouraged from communicating and interacting with other people. Consequently, such students are prone to suffer from isolation. Lastly, a sense of homesick can also create negative influences on exchanged students’ mental well-being. It is true that lacking parental care and friends sharing might ultimately lead to depression.

In conclusion, the preference of studying in another country has its benefits and drawbacks. However, it is apparent that the negative side outweighs the other as students are likely at high risk of suffering from pressure, depression, and isolation in a strange country.
